Plan ahead

Don’t let yourself fall into the trap of last-minute packing, because trust me, it’s a nightmare.

Starting planning at least a month before the moving day.

By breaking down your tasks into manageable chunks, you’ll avoid being overwhelmed.

One of the biggest mistakes people make when moving is waiting until the last minute to start packing.

Starting early not only gives you more time to pack properly but also helps reduce stress as moving day approaches.

Packing Is an Art

When I first moved, I was a hot mess – boxes exploding, important items lost.

But over time, I transformed that chaos into a (somewhat) smooth process.

I’ve learned the art of packing!

Here are some packing tips to help you become a master packer:

  • Start with the essentials: As soon as you know you’re moving, start packing items that you don’t use on a daily basis. This can include seasonal clothes, decorations, and non-essential kitchen appliances.
  • Label everything: Make sure to label each box with its contents and which room it belongs in. This will make unpacking much easier and help you prioritize which boxes to open first.
  • Use the right size boxes: Heavy items such as books should go in smaller boxes, while lighter items like pillows can go in larger ones. This will make moving the boxes much easier and prevent any accidents or injuries.
  • Wrap fragile items properly: Use bubble wrap, packing paper, or even clothes to protect fragile items. Make sure to label these boxes as “fragile” and handle them with care.
  • Pack a “first night” box: Pack a small box with all the essentials you’ll need for your first night in your new home, such as toiletries, pajamas, and a change of clothes. This way, you won’t have to dig through boxes to find what you need when you’re exhausted from the move.
  • Use suitcases and bags: Instead of buying more boxes, use your suitcases and bags as an extra packing option. This will save space in the moving truck and also prevent any of your belongings from getting damaged.

Top-notch, Worthy Moving Boxes will Save You!

Invest in high-quality moving boxes and avoid the dreaded box collapse.

It happened to me once, and trust me, you don’t want to be there.

The truth is , you can never have too many boxes.

Make sure also to get different sizes for different items and use sturdy, reinforced boxes for heavy items.

If you’re on a tight budget, ask your local grocery or liquor store for free boxes. Just make sure they are in good condition and not too worn out.

Decluttering Is Non-negotiable!

Decluttering is often overlooked. “I’ll just pack everything. Problem solved.” Not so fast! You need to be ruthless with stuff you don’t need.

Throw it, donate it, sell it. Lighten your load!

Moving is the perfect time to declutter and eliminate items you no longer use or need.

This will save you time, money, and energy when packing and unpacking. Plus, you’ll have less to move, which means less stress.

So Keep, Donate, Sell, Trash is Your New Mantra.

Pick up each item and ask yourself … Do I need this? Do I love this? If it’s a “no” for both, it might be time to part ways.

To Label or Not to Label?

I cannot stress this enough… LABEL EVERYTHING. It’ll cut down your unpacking time by half, and you won’t have to rummage through boxes to find your indispensable coffee maker after an exhausting moving day!

Label EVERY box.

Trust me, you’ll thank yourself when you’re searching for your toothpaste in between thirty unmarked boxes.

I recommend color-coding or numbering but choose what suits you best!

You can use different colors for each room, number the boxes, and keep a corresponding list of contents. This will make unpacking much easier and more organized.

Move Your Valuables Yourself

Some items are just too valuable or sentimental to trust with the moving company, so it’s best to transport them yourself.

This can include important documents, jewelry, family heirlooms, and fragile items.

Transporting these items separately may be a hassle, but it will give you peace of mind knowing they are safe with you.

Plus, you won’t have to worry about them getting lost or damaged during the move.

Take Photos of Your Electronics

Before unplugging your electronics, take a photo of how everything is connected so you can easily set it up in your new home.

This will save you time and frustration from trying to figure out which cord goes where.

Also, make sure to pack your electronics in their original boxes or use appropriate packing materials to avoid any damage during the move.

Tiny Items Can Ruin Your Day!

You don’t want to search all over for those screws when assembling furniture.

My trick is i tape little baggies with screws to the corresponding furniture.

You’re welcome!

You can also use this method for any small items such as remote controls, keys, and hardware.

Packing is an excellent time to get creative with how to utilize your resources.

Use towels, socks, and even oven mitts to safely pack items and vacuum seal bags to save space.

QUICK TIPS

  • Clothes still in the drawer? Wrap the drawer in a stretch wrap! Instant pack, no mess!
  • Use towels, blankets, and clothes as wrapping materials to protect delicate items – you’re moving them, anyway!

Your First Few Nights Are Important!

Have a survival box

Create a box with all the essentials that you’d need for the first 24 hours in your new home, like toiletries, medications, coffee, a change of clothes, and some snacks.

This will help you achieve some peace of mind in the midst of all the chaos.

Pack essentials separately …a few outfits, toiletries, and important documents. The last thing you need is to panic search for your pyjamas or passport!

It is easy to focus on the big picture when moving, but it’s important to remember the small details as well.

Get Creative With Unloading!

Unload by room, not by item.

You’ll set up your new home much faster, and it’s gonna look clean the entire time.

It’s all about priorities,.

Don’t Forget to Enjoy the Experience!
